Barnsley FC BBS 2 (Brown, Newey) Bradford City BBS 1
Barnsley's BBS fans team produced one of their best ever performances to beat Bradford 2-1 in a 50 minute match prior to the legends game at Oakwell, which saw the two teams raise around £1000 for the Dickie Bird foundation.
Both teams started brightly in front of a noisy crowd, after feeling privileged enough to sign autographs for the youngsters at pitch side - one player even being asked to sign a man's shirt! Both sides played impressive spells of football before Barnsley managed to take the lead after Allen Cooper (Journo Tyke) playing a through-ball to Rob Pick. (BFCFan4Life) The striker cut inside his man before tussling with the defender, and squaring the ball for on-rushing midfielder Ritchie Brown to calmly slide the ball into the bottom corner.
Bradford tried to hit back, with a terrific shot from their full-back from fully 25 yards brilliantly tipped over the bar by young goalkeeper Luke Evans. (Zadok). He then made further one-on-one saves to keep his side in front. Rob Pick shot over from 30 yards and a run by striker Chris Johnson almost saw the Reds extend their lead - the keeper just beating him to a through-ball as the score was 1-0 at half time.
The Reds made 11 changes for the 2 nd half and almost paid it 2-0 when Darrell Harrison raced away down the right hand side. However, as he got into the box and saw his chance of glory, his legs gave way and he unfortunately stumbled to the ground, amid jovial cries for a penalty from his team-mates. They paid for it almost immediately after, conceding a penalty after the referee spotted a handball. Bradford's captain sent young goalkeeper Danny Haig ( reds_tyke) the wrong way to equalize.
The Reds though immediately responded. A long ball was flicked on from the back, and striker Simon Newey (simonbfc) raced onto it, holding off the run of a defender before calmly sliding the ball across the keeper to give Barnsley the lead again.
Andy Laycock (Liquoricetyke) had two chances to extend the lead - stretching to unfortunately put the ball over after good work from his team-mates, and then firingwide after a Simon Newey shot was saved by the Bradford keeper. Barnsley then found themselves on the back foot, with defender Steve Holder (GudjonFan) making two brilliant blocks in a goal-mouth scramble, before keeper Danny Haig made a terrific one-handed save to tip the ball around the post from the rebound as the Reds held on for a superb win before congratulating the fans who'd given them a terrific reception during the game.
All the players would like to specifically thank their player-manager Allen Cooper for organizing the game, and doing the terrific work that he does to maintain and organise the team, which is appreciated by all the players. They would also like to thank Barnsley FC for use of the terrific pitch and allowing 22Barnsley fans an experience they‘ll always remember, The Barnsley FC Supporters Trust, and everyone who has helped to raise money for the Dickie Bird foundation during this terrific event.
