Fan Mail - The FSF Newsletter (May 2009)

Fans from across Europe to meet in Hamburg
In July 2008 more than 250 football fans from 27 countries came together at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium to kick-off the formation of an independent European network of football fans at the first European Football Fans’ Congress. Fan culture, policing, ticketing, anti-discrimination and club ownership were all identified as important areas and much has happened since.

The second European Football Fans’ Congress (EFFC) takes place in Hamburg from 17th-19th July 2009. As well as vital debates on the hot topics of our times there'll be plenty of social events too organised by fans of FC St Pauli and Hamburger SV. Financial support for travel and accomodation for fans’ groups is also available, so if you're skint, don't let that put you off!

For registration or further info on the EFFC click here.

Safe Standing a step closer at Bradford
Back in 2008 we wrote that Bradford were sympathetic towards supporters' wishes to stand so it’s pleasing to see the Bantams' wait for Safe Standing could soon be over. Every survey shows that around 90 per cent of fans are in favour of Safe Standing areas and Stand Up For The Bantams is campaigning to raise funds in order to pay for a trial at Valley Parade. If you would like to get involved email Stand Up For The Bantams today. To hear more about the FSF's work on Safe Standing email Colin Hendrie.

FSF divisional meetings in May
May looks to be a busy month for the FSF divisions as the South West & South Wales, North West & North Wales, and Northeast Divisions all have their annual AGM's. Members and non-members alike are welcome, we're always keen to see new faces.

The South West & South Wales meeting takes at Dorchester Town FC on Sunday, May 17th (12noon for 1pm start) - email Ken Malley for info.
The North West & North Wales come together at the Waldorf Pub in Manchester on Monday, May 18th (buffet from 7pm) - email Phill Gatenby for info.
The Northeast Division will meet at the Garden House in Durham on Wednesday, May 27th (7pm). This is the same day as the Champions League Final but the meeting will wrap up in time for this - email Ginnette Bentley for info.

It's up for grabs now...
We're always on the lookout for a decent read, and Jason Cowley’s The Last Game: Love, Death and Football looks to be just that. The ‘last game’ in question happens to be Arsenal’s extraordinary victory over Liverpool in May 1989 which saw the Gooners nick the league title in the dying seconds of the season. Cowley’s argument is that this was the precise moment when football moved from its first era to the modern era and all that comes with it.

Being a sadistic bunch we persuaded our resident Scouser to review it in the next issue of tfs (the magazine sent to all members – join here) and Fan Mail recipients can win a copy too. To enter, answer the following question – who scored the opener in Arsenal’s 2-0 title clincher over Liverpool in 1989? Answers to [email protected] by 5pm, Friday May 8th.

Holidays in the sun
As we type the rain is battering against the window and the skies are grey. Chained to the keyboard like monkeys typing out the entire works of Shakespeare we can only dream of escaping FSF HQ and getting some sun on our backs but for you, well, the world's your lobster. Check out GB Travel's offers here which are available to all FSF members. And think of us.

Fans’ Parliament 09
FP09 is fast upcoming and we’re keen to see as many members as possible there so get those train tickets booked ASAP. The event takes place in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on the weekend of Saturday, 20th June. We’ll be sending a special edition Fan Mail soon but if you want to read up a little more on Fans’ Parliament click here. We’ve got plenty lined up for all (don’t accuse us of having narrow tastes) but if we had to sum up in three words we’d say…FOOTBALL. BANTER. BEER. Can’t say fairer that that.

Extra Time!
It's Friday and you are morally obliged to waste 10 minutes at work with the FSF's monthly round-up of the childish and immature antics from the world of football.

tfs 015: Out now! With Hillsborough tribute and features on football as art and MyFC.
