Charlton programme notes
As we come towards the end of yet another season, there is everything left to play for at Oakwell, with the reds requiring a win to guarantee championship football next season. The end of the season also sees the annual Supporters Trust Player of the Year award, this year, five players received votes from the Trust members, but the winner of the award by a landslide was defender Stephen Foster, with 63% of the vote. Many compliments were paid to Stephen including Mr Dependable and Mr Reliable. In addition our members also vote for a young player of the year. This was a far closer competition, with Lewin Nyatanga and Michael Coulson slugging it out, with Michael just edging it by one vote.

In our last programme piece we covered three of the objectives the Trust Board set for the Supporters Trust over the next 12 months. Today, we will look at the remaining objectives we have set.

The Supporters Trust hope to develop a community group, with the aim of raising both the Trust and the football clubs profile within the local community and at the same time improve the perception of the football club as a community club. As part of this, we hope to develop further the Oakwell Juniors, as we see the juniors as the lifeblood of the football club. We are also keen to encourage funding and develop the Smile Ticket scheme, whereby deserving people within the local community can get tickets for Barnsley games, when normally they would be unable to attend. These people may be children who have achieved something special, or helped others to overcome problems and it will be our way of saying thank you.

As always, we are also keen to increase our membership, we feel that a strong and vibrant supporters Trust can only be a benefit both to Supporters and the football club. There are many advantages of being a Trust member, and we need our membership to help spread the word and encourage their friends and family to join the trust.

We are also keen to improve the trust office over the summer period, and make it an area where we are proud to being people to, with pictures and information that show our achievements and what we can do. Next season when you come down to Oakwell, why not call in and find out more on the Supporters Trust.

Finally, we would like to wish all Barnsley Supporters a happy and enjoyable close season, and we look forward to seeing you all back at Oakwell next August.

Membership of the Supporters Trust costs just £7.50 for adults, with £4.00 for concessions. Life membership is available for just £100.00. To find out more on the activities of the Supporters Trust visit our website at www.bfcst.org.uk or email [email protected] .

Programme Notes v Leicester City
Following Gordon Shepherds announcement on Tuesday that he will be stepping down at the end of the season, the Supporters Trust would like to thank Gordon Shepherd for all his hard work and commitment to Barnsley FC over the last three seasons. We have always found Gordon very approachable during our meetings with him both on social occasions and during business meetings. We would like to wish Gordon and his family all the best for the future.

At the recent Trust Board meeting, a series of objectives were set for the Trust over the next 12 months. Over this issue of the programme and the final one against Charlton, we will look at our objectives, which should give you some guidance as to the future direction that the Trust is looking to move in.

The first objective was to progress our relationship with the football club. We currently hold regular meetings with the football club, where we can discuss issues relating to Supporters and how things can be improved. We are keen to continue to develop this relationship, which is often looked on with envy by other Supporters Trusts at other clubs.

Our second objective is to increase membership of the Trust. We feel that we need to promote our activities more and encourage the members to stress the advantages of the Trust. A strong Trust we feel can only be of benefit to its members, the supporters and Barnsley FC. We are also working with the football club to look at ticketing priority schemes with the football club. We see this as a key objective to find a suitable and workable scheme that will benefit Barnsley Supporters and the football club.

Programme notes v Chelsea
The Supporters Trust AGM will be held on the 1st April at the Oakwell Executive Facilities. At this meeting, the accounts for the last financial year will be presented to the members. The accounts will show a slight deficit of £811, but we carry forward a balance of just over £9,100. At the AGM, six members of the board will stand down and are eligible for re-election. In addition, we are keen to hear from Trust members who can help and commit time to the trust and who would want to stand for election. If you are interested in standing for the board, please contact the secretary as soon as possible for more details.

Members of the Trust voluntarily gave up a lot of valuable time to help the Club in the ticket distributions for the Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea Games, including an involvement in preparations for the Beam Back staged at Oakwell.

The Trust are aware of the levels of criticism which arose, but supporters should be assured that all our efforts were channelled to try and ensure minimum discomfort and waiting times for those who were in the queue, or helping in the back office in order to release the permanent Club staff from more mundane duties, so they could put all their efforts into serving customers as quickly as possible. Over the first three days of the Chelsea distribution we managed to deal with an average of 60 customers an hour (1 per minute).

One thing became very apparent to the volunteers and that is when you see things from the other side of the "counter", and get an insight into how things really work in the Club, and suddenly the penny drops and you begin to realise and understand why things are done in certain ways and what to the customer may appear to be a daft and stupid action has all the logic and reasoning behind it to be effected in the way that it is.

Following on from our experiences the Trust are in discussion with the Club with a view to improving the system for the future and we would welcome any suggestions from supporters as to ways forward. These should be sent to [email protected]
