The Supporters Trust is extremely disappointed to hear that allegations have been made that some Barnsley Supporters who went to the Doncaster game allegedly directed unwarranted and mischievous chants towards the Doncaster Striker Billy Sharp. These allegations have been transmitted on the social media system Twitter on Monday night and have subsequently been picked up some of the national press. It is the view of the Supporters Trust that the subsequent news articles and internet rumours are mischievious, as they are reporting such matters as fact, when in truth the actual events are unconfirmed. Indeed supporters from both Barnsley and Doncaster, the press present and Billy Sharp in particular have reported that they did not hear any of the alleged chanting.
Whilst the Trust are aware of reports that a single individual was responsible for a chant towards Billy Sharp, rather than several fans or a group of fans. Furthermore, it was reported from sources inside the ground that the person responsible for the chant was immediately silenced by his fellow supporters who were disgusted by his behaviour. If anyone can identify this individual, please contact the Supporters Trust or the football club so that an investigation can be conducted and appropriate action taken if necessary.
It is really poor that such stories should be printed without foundation and regrettably this seems to be having a negative impact on the good name of Barnsley Football Club and its supporters. The Supporters Trust will work extremely hard with Barnsley Football Club to dispel this allegation and clear the name of Barnsley Football Club and its supporters. Over 3000 Barnsley fans attended the game and were well behaved and a credit to the Barnsley Football Club.
In addition our thoughts are once again with Billy and his family as the mere mention this alleged incident cannot be very pleasant for them to have to deal with.
